you go to my head

In case you didn't know, Billie Holiday is amazing. She's been on my heavy rotation list for about a month now. Sure, I listened to her before, but lately I've got a bad case of can't get it out of my head. Appropriate, no?

Go, Billie...

You go to my head,

And you linger like a haunting refrain

And I find you spinning round in my brain

Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne.

You go to my head

Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew

And I find the very mention of you

Like the kicker in a julep or two.

The thrill of the thought

That you might give a thought

To my plea casts a spell over me

Still I say to myself: get a hold of yourself

Can't you see that it can never be?

You go to my head

With smile that makes my temperature rise

Like a summer with a thousand Julys

You intoxicate my soul with your eyes

Though I'm certain that this heart of mine

Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance,

You go to my head.

The way she sings the line, "Though I'm certain that this heart of mine hasn't a ghost of a chance..." just breaks me down. I can't help but get a little teary-eyed. That particular line really hits home for me, since my typical romantic experience involves plunging into love, head-first, without a safety net or safety floaties. This is fine, but when it's not reciprocated, it can be a wee bit on the painful side.
